American cheese is considered ‘processed’ cheese, which doesn’t really explain anything about its true nature. It’s basically a form of cheese that can be made more rapidly that the traditional process. Additionally, its production method lends it to being more malleable and meltable. It’s often sold in single–serving ‘squares’ which are easily applied to sandwiches without the hassles of regular cheese. Some cheese connoisseurs like to scoff at American cheese, which is somewhat questionable since being a cheese enthusiast isn’t terribly dignified in the first place.
American cheese generally tastes very mild and creamy and is better defined as a cheese–flavored sheet instead of actual cheese. Its color varies from white to yellow, but it generally always tastes the same. Although the concept of American cheese is respectable, its not necessarily a spectacular food.
American Cheese became an official snack on July 17th 2012.
