When referring to salad, garden salad is usually the default variety. It’s composed of lettuce, various vegetables, and toppings. In recent times, the garden salad has transformed rather far from its ‘garden’ origin, opening the door for snacks that previously had absolutely nothing to do with salad. Like pizza and yogurt, garden salad is the kind of food that can be decorated with a variety of other foods, which has resulted in a fair amount of serve–yourself style “salad bars”.
A traditional garden salad is fairly unappetizing, which is exactly why people quickly began loading other ingredients on top of it (ham, bacon, etc.). Because of this, garden salad has a rather large range of possible flavor, from bland to good. It’s often topped with a dressing, usually Ranch or vinaigrette.
Garden Salad became an official snack on May 21st 2012.
